UniProtKB description:  Major virulence factor whose phospholipase activity facilitates pore formation by the pore-forming toxin listeriolysin O (LLO), leading to vacuolar membrane disruption and vacuolar escape of L.monocytogenes, which enables the bacterium to spread in the host (PubMed:37838694). Acts as a phospholipase C exhibiting broad substrate specificity, with the highest activities towards diacylglycerophospholipids with phosphocholine, phosphoserine, and phosphoethanolamine head groups, but less towards phosphoglycerol or phosphoinositol head groups (PubMed:1904842, PubMed:37838694, PubMed:8331063). Is also able to hydrolyze sphingomyelin and plasmenylethanolamine (PubMed:1904842, PubMed:8331063).
