UniProtKB description: Essential for septate junctions. Septate junctions, which are the equivalent of vertebrate tight junctions, are characterized by regular arrays of transverse structures that span the intermembrane space and form a physical barrier to diffusion. Required for formation of the hemolymph-brain barrier (the insect blood-brain barrier). Vital for embryonic development. Involved in the targeting for degradation or recycling of certain septate junction components, including kune and bou/boudin, by regulating their endocytosis (PubMed:28977027).
