It is often found in association with the C-terminal part of the GNAT Acetyltransf_1 (Pfam:PF00583) domain. It seems to be motifs C and D of the structure. Histone acetyltransferases (HATs) catalyse the transfer of an acetyl group from acetyl-CoA to the lysine E-amino groups on the N-terminal tails of histones. HATs are involved in transcription since histones tend to be hyper-acetylated in actively transcribed regions of chromatin, whereas in transcriptionally silent regions histones are hypo-acetylated [1].

It is involved in different biological processes including cell progression, glucose metabolism, histone production or DNA damage repair. HAT1 acetylates histone H4 at Lys-5 and Lys-12, and to a lesser extend, Lys-5 in histone H2A [3,4]. The C-terminal domain of HAT1 is highly variable and not required for HAT activity [4]. It consists of a bundle of helices and a short beta-strand. This entry includes HAT1 from animals.
