Lytic transglycosylases catalyze the cleavage of the beta-1, 4-glycosidic bond between N-acetylmuramic acid (MurNAc) and N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) in peptidoglycan with concomitant formation of a 1,6-anhydro bond in the MurNAc residue.
