UniProtKB description: Ant peptide with probable defensive activity which acts as a potent agonist of the mammalian epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) (EC(50)=6.3 nM). Mimics, both structurally and functionally, vertebrate epidermal growth factor (EGF) peptide hormones. In vivo, intraplantar injection in mice causes long-lasting (several days) hypersensitivity of the injected paw to both mechanical and thermal stimuli. Its long-lasting effect is unusual for venom toxins whose effects are usually immediate. One possible explanation is that it would reduce the duration of a nest attack, discourage future attacks, or enhance the actions of subsequent exposure to other pain-inducing venom peptides.
