This structure, which has two oxygens of the bicarbonate equatorially coordinated to Co 2+ and water at the axial position, is almost identical to the Co 2+ carbonic anhydrase binding bicarbonate (PDB... 1CAH)  ( Figure 6 ) and also the structure of cobalt tris[2-isopropylimidazol-4(5)-yl]phosphane coordinating to nitrate and water  .
An overlay of the I3 structure in the active site of 1CAH shows the bicarbonate would be in close contact with the side chain of L198.
Panel (D) shows the arrangement of ligands (water and bicarbonate) around the metal ion in the X-ray crystal structure of cobalt carbonic anhydrase (1CAH).
